Battle of Buxar

Battle of Buxar (1764 AD)

  • The decisive 'Battle of Buxar' began on 23 October 1764 between the Mughal Emperor Shah Alam, Nawab of Awadh and the combined army of Mir Qasim and the English army (led by Hector Munro) in the plain of Buxar (located east of Benares). Before the start of the war, the British joined the army of Nawab of Awadh with Asad Khan Sahumal (Subedar of Rohtas) and Zainul Abadin.
  • The combined coalition of Mir Qasim was defeated in the Battle of Buxar because it did not prepare adequately for the war, and the Indian Army was prone to a variety of flaws.
  • The Battle of Buxar proved the superiority of the British army against the combined forces of the then major Indian powers.
  • The Battle of Buxar established full dominance of the Company over Bengal, Bihar and Orissa, with Awadh becoming a favoured by the British.
